HAPKIDO

“I have learned so much and have gained a lot of strength. Who would have thought that I could take up a martial art as a 50 year old. But if I can do it and keep up with these two kiddos you can too!

I feel more energetic and I love having an activity with the kids to bond over. It’s a little humbling at first with the kids but really worth it. And fun.”

"Watching my two boys in their Hapkido classes, I realized that just sitting on the sidelines wasn’t enough—I wanted to be a part of the journey with them. So, I joined. What started as a way to stay active quickly became a transformational experience for our entire family.

Hapkido has instilled in my boys something far greater than physical skill—it has taught them the power of a "can-do" mindset. Instead of saying "I can't," they now approach challenges with determination, knowing that effort and perseverance lead to growth. This shift in perspective has carried over into their schoolwork, friendships, and everyday responsibilities.

Beyond mindset, the values of respect, self-discipline, and perseverance have become part of our family culture. Instead of giving up when things get tough, they push forward with confidence, knowing that discipline and consistency lead to success.

Training together has deepened our bond as a family. Hapkido isn't just something my boys do — it's something we do together. It’s a shared experience that strengthens our connection, keeps us active, and provides quality time focused on learning, improving, and supporting one another.

It’s more than martial arts; it’s a foundation for resilience, respect, and lifelong learning that we carry into everything we do."

“To say I’m excited about this journey with Hapkido is an understatement. I’m almost 50 (omg), and just starting to focus on my own self care consistently. At first, classes were fun but intimidating. Now, two months in with the help of the amazing students and instructor (who I absolutely adore) I am finding my strength, challenging myself, and really getting into my groove!

Now is the time to join us at Martial Arts Institute, Socorro for some fun, hard work, and an education on self discipline, respect, and control! Doesn’t matter if it takes time to learn. Do this for YOU. Join us! Flip the script.”

“I joined Martial Arts Institute, Socorro NM on their grand opening in tai chi. I started with wanting to get better balance, strength and honestly better mental health. Anyone who knows me knows both of my knees are rebuilt and not the best.

I then joined hapkido also with my son. I'm finding out I can do more then I thought possible. I'm also loosing weight and getting stronger. Although I'm still cautious, I'm learning to trust my body more.”

“Learning martial arts has helped build up my strength and endurance.”

“Wyatt has grown a lot this fall. In particular he feels like he has learned a lot about R-E-S-P-E-C-T. He has more respect for himself and definitely for others. He listens, sits (mostly) still, and obeys. He has taken this from the Do Jang (gym) and transferred it to better behavior at school too.”

“Josie would like to share how much she has improved in her flexibility. Consistent stretching and exercise has paid off in coordination and toe touching and less growing pains. Goodness knows that girl has grown in height this year. Thank you Martial Arts Institute of Socorro!”

"One of the things I didn’t expect from taking Hapkido with the kids - as a family - is how much it would connect us. It’s our secret language at home. It’s the hidden smiles and looks when we watch a movie with any kind of fight scene. It’s the fact that we have something in common with depth to talk about. And I love that it’s something we do together with no screens!

I also love when we practice at home and the kids coach me. This is something where they can respectfully correct me and give me pointers. It’s usually the opposite!"

TAE KWON DO

“We first put our son into tae kwon do in an effort to help with his balance and coordination. In addition to making huge strides and progress in those areas, tae kwon do has become his favorite part of the week.

We absolutely LOVE!!! tae kwon do for our little man. It has helped him so much with his growing and he has learned so much from it. Thank you Misty!”

TAI CHI CHUAN

“We are three generations working hard to improve our life both physically and mentally by attending tai chi as a family with the Martial Arts Institute, Socorro. I can honestly say that we all enjoy our time in class with Misty Millhorn.

I'm happy that we now have a better relationship with each other at home. This picture just proves that age doesn't matter in martial arts. We are all capable of greatness if we just try!”

“Very, VERY Proud of Millhorn Kyosahnim, students, and the families of the Martial Arts Institute, Socorro! Of the three Taoist Treasures, the first is to be kind. The families of MAIS are among the kindest and most supportive of any that I have had the pleasure of meeting!”
